The utilization of a flywheel is one of the promising approaches for large scale electric power storage which is indispensable for active power compensation in the power system. Especially, a flywheel system using a variable speed drive doubly-fed synchronous machine is advantageous for a large scale high efficiency system. This paper clarifies the power amplifying effect of such a system. Based on the differential equations on a γ-δframe of a wound rotor type induction machine, the instantaneous and the average power flow including active and reactive ones are analyzed and studied from a view point of its physical meanings.
