A classroom observation was conducted in the function area focusing on the mathematical inquiry learning of a third-grade (15-year-old age level) class (20 students) at a certain secondary school in Tokyo. A qualitative discourse analysis based on students’ utterances, including students’ rawing pictures on graphs, was done.
