A number of studies have reported that the Baxter process had a large impact on the birth of Chromoxylography (colour wood engraving) practiced by wood engravers like George Cargill Leighton and Edmund Evans from 1850s, but few have compared both methods in detail. The present paper deals with the technical and stylistic characteristics of the Baxter process and its uniqueness. Through the research in Victoria & Albert Museum in London, we studied the difference between Baxter's prints and other's colour prints with wood blocks such as William Savage's method in 1822 and Evans's Chromoxylography.
