| 内容記述 | Natural snow crystals most commonly exhibit six branches forming the hexagonal “six-petalled” type, though crystals with fewer branches—such as two-, three-, or four-branched types—are occasionally observed. Reflecting these forms, Kikuchi et al. classified six-, two-, three-, and four-branched crystals. However, one- and five-branched types are absent from Kikuchi’s classification. In February 2024, both one- and five-branched snow crystals were observed at Mt. Asahidake, Hokkaido, Japan. These are considered to have formed through the partial separation of branches from a typical six-branched crystal, similar to the processes proposed for two-, three-, and four-branched types. Additionally, previously unclassified forms were identified, including seven- and eight-branched crystals and a “triangular six-branched” type possessing six branches but showing an overall triangular geometry. Some triangular six-branched crystals appear to consist of one singlebranched and one five-branched component, indicating a more complex formation process. These findings reveal previously unreported morphological diversity in natural snow crystals and suggest greater complexity in ice crystal growth and branching mechanisms than previously recognized. |
