L2 English speakers do not necessarily adhere to the conversational styles of L1 speakers, as their styles are shaped by each speaker’s socio-cultural background. Drawing from video and audio recordings in the corpus of the English and Japanese Interaction Research Group, the analysis focuses on conversational segments where responses were provided to questions. Four excerpts were analyzed using a qualitative approach, highlighting moments when participants encountered unexpected conversational dynamics. Key findings indicate that original questions in L2 conversations in the data were often left unanswered, conversational control frequently shifted, and feedback to responses was lacking. These disruptions resulted in incomplete and disjointed interactions, particularly in instances where cultural norms, such as specific measurement systems, led to misunderstandings. The study concludes that cultural and linguistic barriers, along with limited engagement with responses, impede the effectiveness of question-answer sequences in ELF environments.
