First, the “engagement of Mendelssohn with oratorio” and the “life of Paul” are briefly summarized. Subsequently, the musical pieces comprising St. Paul, including arias, recitatives, choruses, and chorales, which are based on quotations from the Acts of the Apostles and other parts of the New and Old Testaments, are analyzed. The relationship between St. Paul and St. Matthew Passion composed by J. S.
